The compilation of the programme of the GA 2008 in Brussels has started

The EUEW maintains relationships with other Associations from the electrical sector. Meetings are organised and information is exchanged. As one of the first topics of our General Assembly our President will summarise the activities of the EUEW during the previous year. After that a specialist will give us a summary of the main developments in our sector.

After this general information we will start with our main theme: "Europe, the main player in the changes that influence our businesses today and tomorrow".
This very wide subject will be translated into presentations and interviews which will be interesting to the attendees.

Knowing that there are a lot of changes in Europe it is easy to see that there is not enough time to examine each new directive or rule during one General Assembly. Luckily not every change will have the same impact on our business and we shall be able to make some choices.

For starters we are looking for a presentation which will make a forecast of what is ahead. It is certainly not with the intention of going into too much detail. We simply want to provide an inventory of the possible consequences to the Wholesalers businesses.

What are the main topics?

We shall of course listen with great interest to Commissar Piebalgs. The consequences of political changes concerning energy will certainly be of prime importance to our businesses. The more we are aware of what is ahead, the better we can organize ourselves to service the market.

Andris Piebalgs
Tomorrow 20% of electricity will have to come from alternative Sources and making reductions in energy consumption will become a priority.
To achieve these objectives in our homes we will require "state of the art" heating, cooling and ventilation systems as well as better insulation. Who will develop and install these very complex systems in the future? Will it be the integrated businesses of tomorrow? Must the Electrical Wholesaler enlarge his offer to embrace the HVAC sectors of the market?

Energy is becoming a scarce resource

New kinds of companies, ESCO's (Energy Service Companies), are becoming more and more important. How do they see their role and the role of the Wholesaler? Let us ask one of them to give us his point of view.

Andris Piebalgs
Light business represents something around 15% of our business. We hear that incandescent lamps will be banned. So what will be the impact on our business? Will the wholesaler need more stock and more capital to fund the increase? Will the complexity of our businesses grow? Will we benefit from more competition etc.? What volatility will we face when the ban starts? We will ask a Wholesaler and a Manufacturer to discuss these topics and to present us their conclusions.

Last year we spoke about counterfeit products. Our friends from the Manufacturers explained to us what is happening in China, and how dangerous products are entering the markets. We see day after day, an increase of low quality products in our market. Everybody knows that the CE mark has little meaning. This year we will ask ourselves how market control is organised in Europe. Can we expect some changes in the attitude of countries about market surveillance? Are other associations active in that area? What is the actual situation in the area of market surveillance? Will it change? What can we do?

Andris Piebalgs
As you can see we already have many topics. Nevertheless, if you have subjects which are within the theme of our General Assembly and you would like to have them included, please contact us. We will do our best to include them if there is an opportunity. Andris Piebalgs
